Stop!
Don't download it!
This is a coded drug for creative minds.
Highly adictive and pure endless fun.
And a tiny but very motivated community exploring all possibilities from Water paint - oil paint up to something close to 2,5 D painting/sculpting...almost.
If some virus allert is trying to take your fun - I can't confirm. Checked it with several scanners, internal and online.
Yes! Nice one.
Don't forget to carefully look into the manual for hotkeys.
Shift is for smudging - most beautiful and fast smudging in CG. imho.
Shift+STRG is for blending and you can flatten your bump.
STRG for erase.
Playing with fluidity and build up and blending you can almost sculpt a bit.
Adjusting light (SHIFT + Arrows for xy and SHIFT Page Up & Down for Z) & layer bump for quick volume and paint over on an extra layer.
And soon you are addicted
Edit:
You can go even thicker. That's one of my first tryouts with verve. Biger waves are more bumps than painted
The brush system is very easy built - on the first view.
Changing the bristle size and numbers and bias leads you to thousands variations.
A few bristles and thin bristle size and you an amazing strong hair brush.
I used only brush 2 in variations for this portrait.
The bump is always painting with you, adding shadows for you.
And due to the fact, that this is a dynamic fluid simulation, smoke was done in exactly 42 seconds

Cool new features for using verve with other apps:
- [Ctrl]+ saves the currently selected layer with Alpha as a 16bit png.
- [Ctrl]+[Shift]+ saves two png images: one is color only as "filename_col.png", the other is material only as "filename_mat.png" (heightmap).
Original verve export: (Just a quick test with 1280x720 resolution)
The interface is certainly giving me flashbacks. God that's bad. I've played around with a previous version for a bit though, and it's great, but damn. That interface is inexcusable.
@Mighty Pea
As I saw Knobs first time, I thought: Hell! He can't do that.
But UI is WIP and not so bad as it looks as first impression.
In fact, it has it's cons, but is easy to use once in.
And it's self explaining.
Knobs moved with LMB & horizontal move= big steps, LMB & vertical move = fine steps.
Hotkeys are solving almost every needs, if you are once in.
Some functions are available as hotkeys only.
It's free, it's new, it's changed on an almost daily basis.
You get much, much more than you paid for.
Results are crazy and crazy fast - you can do so much different styles easily.
Verve has an adjustable canvas structure now.
An excellent brush #9 for hyper realistic painting and very smooth line work.
A simple image import for jpg and png. Which is still crude but helpful.
An adjustable canvas size.
A warp mode, like photoshops liquify, but in verve with real liquid.
And much more tiny improvements.
Here a little 10 Min. abstract test I did with metallic layers & light layer.
It is for sure!
I really love the layer "add" (+) function.
It makes drawing lights and glows easy as never before.
Or brush #8 for clouds, trees, mud and laser tunnel
verve will gonna have a UI refresh and a new brush engine, which will take a bit time.
Meanwhile a verve pic turned into 3D . This time using 3ds max and free Corona Renderer v Alpha 0.6.
Maybe that is helpful to get some more into verves easiness of fluid dynamic simulation painting. I just made a selection of most used. For detailed description and free download check here : http://www.taron.de/forum/viewforum.php?f=4
Verve makes it incredible easy to work with light i.e.
There have been a lot of features implemented lately. Colour - hoover mouse over anything and any app on your desktop and ALT will pick colour. -Colour swatches - separate storable and pretty innovative.
Brush engine -Image brush, define anything on your canvas as a brush, multiple brushes can played back as an animation or random during stroke. Very useful for grass and clouds - all done in verve.
Image brush can also been used for a lot of freaky stuff, coloured strokes and much more. To much to explain in short. -Paint in add mode makes it super easy to add light & fire
Fluids -improved fluids, even more precise and lovely - just a few strokes, frame added in photoshop
Endless abstracts possibilities:
New canvas -just gives an even more realistic feeling. Done with one brush type only. (cross post from Sketch thread)
Warp - like photoshop liquify but with the possibility to really liquify things too.
I played around with almost any app available. There are things missing, but the possibilities are already outstanding. Give it a try. Download: http://www.taron.de/forum/viewtopic.php?f=4&t=4 If there are any questions the little friendly community there will always help.
it is absolutely worth to have a deeper look at. UI is pretty a mess but will change. Therefore hotkeys are very logical. just press STRG+LMB to erase or SHIFT+LMB to smudge, SPACE+LMB for resizing your brush. That is super fast with a tablet. As you can export the displacement map too, a bunch of other possibilities are given. Photoshop is still a good companion for things not possible in verve. But for drawing and painting it feels so real. Pure fun.
It happened quite a lot since last time. New brush (hotkey '0') is improved more. You can define anything on canvas as a brush, AND you can have plenty of different pictures in a set. You can select just one picture BUT also a continuous run through all pictures while one brush stroke. That is simply amazing. You can choose random too.
- Undo Brush: Hold down [z] to paint with undo brush!
New are the color swatches. "Changes v0.99v.12: - [Shift]+[c] brings up COLOR SWATCHES!"
Changes v0.99v.14: - Experimental "Hue dancer"...dial up an amount of hue randomness for each new stroke.
Changes v0.99v.15: - new canvas texture procedural. [Ctrl]+[p] to
toggle through the 3 modes: 0 = fractal noise, 1 = canvas, 2 = grab
layer material
- pick colors from anywhere on the desktop. Hold [Alt] to sample colors, but don't click, it already grabs the color!
- color wheel widget [c] can now be scaled just like color swatches.
Hold down [Ctrl] when on the upper left color handle and [LMB] drag the
mouse to scale!
One example: Warping in verve can be super fun. Mostly if you turn on fluidity and the warp gets liquid. But sometimes you simply want this classic liquify effect from Photoshop. There are some rules you have to obey to achieve this, which are 10 seconds to prepare. The workspace is then even much better than in PS as you see everything in realtime EVEN when you have the picture mirrored in the center by pressing F5.
I can't even open the page. My security soft tells me the site is kind of doing "malicious domain request" hosting severe malware or something. Not sure if they mean verve itself or not. Do somebody know what is it all about?
That's a terrible mistake by many antivirus software. It seems that verve was once reported to contain viruses. Since then the program and the site is sometimes blocked for no reason. In fact me and a big bunch of people are using this program and the website without any issue since years. These wrong messages are blocking people to explore this really nice little free software. It's a pitty. The only thing I can say is, that I never heard about a real problem. Nowhere. The only issue I heard of was a very old GPU having serious problems with fluid simulations and passed away.
Maybe the program is too good to be free and succesful? But it seems that taron would like to go commercial once the progrqm is ported to C++ and the UI is refined.
Additional information about virus warnings, as I became a bit concerned if I was reporting about an virus infected program.
Norton fully checked taron.de as SAFE.
As norton had blacklisted taron.de I sent a false positive report and now taron.de is rated SAFE:
The Norton Safe Web Team has re-evaluated your submission to the block
page False Positive site. Our analysts have re-evaluated the issue of
the suspected false positive site:taron.de.
The result of this re-evaluation is a change in the Norton Safe Web rating for this site.
In the past, taron offered the program as a compressed exe as direct download from his page. That was probably the mistake as a bunch of trojans used same compression? After he is offering the program uncompressed, it is scanned without any warning as one can see scan above from virus total.
I hope this clarify that verve is virus free and we can go back to fun mode There is no bad verve

I've tried various techniques in photoshop to emulate thick oil paints, this looks like it'll be a LOT faster.

There is no bad verve
It's clean
Loaded a png with alpha into verve, used layermask to mask fluids.
Process is described here and on following page:
