Smart Guides for Maya? And essential MEL scripts?

I wondered if there is a feature or plugin for Maya that gives you a smart guide like in Adobe Illustrator, because I figured that my main source of bad geometry is that I accidentally move vertices that are supposed to be in line with others. It is just really annoying to clean up afterwards and although I guess it's not a very good idea to use some kind of smart guide once you have mastered Maya, it would help me being more of a beginner a lot. Other than that is there any essential MEL scripts or plugins that help you guys with your work flow?

You can turn on the "snap to grids", it´s under the menu bar..
