The game that inspires you most.

I've just felt knowing which game brings out the most inspiration out of you, as an artist?

I know some of you can't make a choice to only choose one game but on this thread you'll have to.

Basically, as an artist, which game do you always refer yourself to keep doing what you're doing? Your top of the video game pantheon. The excellency of artistical direction.

Whenever you play it, the magic is so strong at the screen, you say to yourself everytime:

''THIS IS WHY I'VE BECOME A 3D ARTIST!''

If it's a N64 or even Snes game, don't be shy, the old games have amazing art too!


And please, explain why.

Loved the characters, the environments, the colors, and the awesome Steve Purcell humor.

It's hard to pick a single game since there are so many amazing games that I've played over the years. My favorite would have to be the American McGee's Alice franchise, it has always had incredible art, an amazing soundtrack, and an epic story. The gameplay is pretty weak in both games in the franchise but everything else is perfect.

The sequel, Alice:Madness Returns is $5 on Steam at the moment, it's definitely worth picking up in my opinion!

I don't think you can point to a single game and say 'This is the sole reason'. For me, it's the amazing variety that you can find, not any singular source that inspires me most. Warcraft III got me into game art, but there have been so many games along the way that had a profound impact on how I view games and game art. Portal, TeamFortress2, Dishonored, the Mass Effect series, the new Tomb Raider, Spec Ops: The Line, The Witcher 2, Starcraft II, World of Warcraft, TES: Oblivion, Dota, Mirror's Edge and about twice as many that I'm forgetting. Most recently I've been enchanted by Bioshock Infinite and especially Darksiders.

I adore the art direction in Deus Ex: Human Revolution; and of course the game itself.

Dishonored is another excellent game that has, along with Bastion, gotten me interested in hand painted styles—not that I've made any progress towards creating these types of art yet.

Agree with Deus Ex: Human Revolution, however it was not what got me started.

I would have to give that to max payne 1 and 2 also the 3d mark software for having such awesome tech demos.

I could never pick just one game.

Ocarina of Time and Majora's Mask were always an inspiration to me. Though the're old, the art direction still holds up. Skyward Sword is gorgeous too.

When I started to really get into this stuff, Unreal Tournament 3 and Doom 3. Got special/limited/something editions of both.

These days, either DXHR or RAGE - some blurry textures be damned, it's gorgeous on a decent PC

Metroid Prime, without question. I think I was 14 when I beat that game, and after that, I knew what I needed to do. I know it's super dated now, but the scenery blew my mind when I first played it.

for all the games i've enjoyed very few have graphically inspired me, bioshock comes to mind and red dead, but they are both strong narrative driven games so its hard to say if my admiration merely comes from the narrative or solely the graphics themselves.

Halo, the environments and landscapes are just stunning from Halo CE right up to Halo 4.

seconding this. all 3 games still looks decent ran through an emulator too

The Torvus bog in 2 made me want to learn environment art.

Video games in general inspire me because I'm still blown away we can create these virtual worlds in 2D or 3D.

I can watch a video of an old PS1 game and that would be enough to get me to open 3DS Max or Photoshop and start making stuff.
