Cant properly paint Envelopes ._.

Hello, I'm trying to rig a character in 3ds max using bones + skin (I believe this is the common method... if it's not, let me know!).
After I added the bones to the skin modifier, it automatically generated the envelopes for each bone, which is ok. Obviously, they are not very nice and I wanted to edit them:

The only problem here is I'm not able to remove areas like that on the characters back... even with the Paint Weights tool and manually setting the weight of the vertices to 0.

Am I doing something wrong? Total noob here... hehe
