Stuck in my Head

I've returned from GDC with a whole slew of new information for getting myself into the industry. I need some improvement. The past week I've been thinking in my head, going back and forth on whether or not to learn Substance Designer and/or Painter, or focus on what I know and improve my portfolio with that knowledge. I ask on Polycount because I know I can get some positive feedback or pushed in some kind of direction. I ask because I'm not coming up with an answer at the moment and think that an outside source would be helpful for me. Should I focus on what I know and improve upon it or add something new to it(ie SD and/or SP)? Any info or advice would be great.

I guess your ultimate goal is to keep updating your portfolio with new content until you get work.
No reason why you can't use SD and or SP on one of those projects to get familiar with it.
I wouldn't count on being able to use those programs in a job environment, they might not always be in the pipeline.
In the end you will have another piece for your portfolio and a new program in your repertoire.

Learning more tools is virtually always a good idea, and there's nothing preventing you from improving your skills in general while learning a new tool. Personally I think tools like Substance, dDo, etc are only going to be more and more popular within studios due to the ever increasing need for more and more content.

Very true. There is nothing preventing me from learning new software. I guess I just gotta slow down a bit and work on what I can and not try to do a million things at once. It'll get straightened out some how. Either of you use SD or SP?

Not yet, i got the trial of Painter, and even put money away for it, and i just finished a project i was meant to try it out on. but i forgot and used 3d coat haha.

Very interested in it though, keeping close tabs on the substance painter master thread in hopes something jogs my motivation to delve into it.
