Crates are usually made from cheap, light wood - white pine rather than oak.

The bands on top would probably go across the entire top if they were present - they are fairly cheap and you'd only have half as many points to nail.

Consider adding stencils - product description, shipping address; "this end up" with the arrow pointing down is a perennial favorite.

Don't be afraid to add wood grain to the normal map - the cheap wood is often only roughly finished.
