Nooby - My Quake & Doom Sculpts

Hello all, my first post of what i feel will be many, as the MudBox bug has bit hard.

I've been modeling off and on since about 97-98, but never really got into it seriously. I had a friend who was a professional who i got an old version of Lightwave from, and from time to time i would make models for my Quake levels and make basic scenes that were mostly untextured experiments.

I never really learned how to UVunwrap or animate properly, it was only this year i learned how to use 3DS max to make a model and UVunwrap it, and i also started up with MudBox, which was another hand-me-down from my friend which has gone unused till about 3 weeks ago.

For a few years now ive been working on a remake of the 1998 game Trespasser, and i'm at the point where i'll need to start making high detail models, but my skills really needed some improving.

I decided to take a break from the project and start working on something a little simpler, making textures, weapons and models from Doom 64 to learn the basics of Max and educate myself on the latest texturing formats and techniques.

I remade some of Doom64's 64x64 textures into new 512x512 versions, which i applied to a plane in Max and then created 3D geometry to render into displacement maps:

I also had a go at remaking the chaingun and the demon head logo:

I made a fairly low poly model of the Pinky demon, which i then UVunwrapped and imported into MudBox to test out. The mesh was good enough to make my first attempt at sculpting really simple and it actually turned out a hell of a lot better than i ever imagined. It took me about 6 hours in total including learning MudBox.

Filled with confidence, I assumed my second sculpt would be epic, but it was an epic failure when i discovered it had an open edge that MudBox didnt pick up on. I also had trouble with the mesh subdividing unevenly, due to the low poly nature of the base mesh.

Anyway, after a very troubled start i've managed to get my new sculpt to about 80-85% of where i want it to be.

This one's the Infantry from Quake2:

I've learned a lot from these two sculpts and i'm pretty confident my next sculpt will take half as long as the Infantry has so far, which is about a week off and on.

I'll probably do a few more sculpts of some characters from id software's classic games before i try to take on a dinosaur. I really want to be sure i have the whole process nailed down.

I do have some questions i'd like to ask, but i will wait till the end of this sculpt and see if i can solve them myself.

If anyone has any suggestions for my next sculpt, feel free. I'm kinda leaning towards the Quake1 Ogre or Enforcer.

Cheers.
