Using free/premium template from web for portfolio

Just wanted to ask, what you think about it.
I've been putting portfolio together, and and stumbled across few nice free templates for site.
Though I'm not going to use them exactly as they are (I need to customize them for my custom blogfolio app)m I won't be making big changes either.
Or maybe I should go with completly custom theme. I've been trying, but it's going well. No as good as I would like it.
What's you thoughts on it ?

As for the changes I will know exactly when I start messing around, but general plan is to possibly remove some unnesseary space for text, and changing colors a bit to something darker/toned down.
I want to retain blog section.
