Shelby Cobra 427 S/C - WIP

Hi, Polycount community. I'd like to hear some critique with regards this project of mine to get a real learning experience out of it. I'm working on a 1965 Shelby Cobra 427 S/C, similar to what is pictured here.

The model has a target of between 30,000 to 40,000 triangles and it currently weighs in at 39,369 triangles. I intend to create a few high polygon meshes for the underneath sections, engine and interior for some normal baking.

The project began just before Christmas 2013 and was only able sporadically small amounts of time on it between mid-December and early January. However, I will be resuming work on this project as I'm slowly getting ym weekends back to spend on it and critique from the polycount community would be of great help to me.

The model will be broken into a few separate sections for mapping:
  • Tyre Tread
  • Alloy Wheels
  • Body Paint
  • Mechanical Parts (Mostly Underside)
  • Interior and Exterior Parts

Once the classic Shelby Cobra model has been finalised, I will continue the project as a push towards a different Shelby Cobra - one fitted with an Audi V12.

Looks great! I wonder if the smoothness of the body would look better if you used Face-Weighted Normals?

It looks like the the rims are smaller on your model than the picture you are using as concept. I also feel as thought the whole mesh seems a little long? Like it has been stretched out.

    Keep up the good work.

I'll give it a go with Face-Weighted Normals. I've found an older polycount thread on the subject and it a good read.

I've got a problem with finding images of an original 1965 Shelby Cobra 427 S/C. There are a lot of kit cars out there that could be built upon older model Shleby Cobra bodies or earlier AC Cobra bodies.

The wheels are also in the same boat as the body reference images and the rear wheels have a bigger diameter as well as width but the same alloy wheel.

The Cobra is also a longer car than it appears to be at certain angles. The back of it dips as it elongates out but can also vary between original and kit cars.

    Here's one of a 1965 Shelby Cobra 427 S/C.

Both of you, thank you for the critique. I will be looking at the normals and length of the mesh.

The Face-Weighted Normal script on this thread really helped. It certainly brought out the shape better and it will let me take some loops out of the body.

Does look pretty good with the face weighted normals, especially things like the headlights. Glad it worked out for ya!

Gonna texture/shade the rest of the model?

Yeah but first I'm going to create a few high poly meshes to bake some normals for the underneath and engine bay.

That's a huge improvement with the face weighted normals :D Now get that thing textured ;)

Looking cool. I really want to do a car soon so this is good to study.

How are you getting reference for underneath the engine bay? Or underneath the car or in the engine in general? Just Google image search?

    Thanks, dude.

I've done one previously that might help with your study.

Yeah but I'm also trying to find car club and fan sites for Shelby cars. I've been reading up on aspects of the car too, so that I can tell which picture is and which isn't of the old school Cobra.

At the moment, the underside is based on a single thread with pictures of a Shelby Cobra. The only problem is that it may be a kit car, so I'll have to find something similar to a Haynes book on the Cobra.

A short bump for a short update. It's been a while since I last added to this thread, but I've still been working on this project a few weekends here and there.

Mostly wheels and body work changes, as well as a quick material pass in UDK to see how the topology is shaping up. I plan to redo the underneath mechanical components and the engine as I've found some more info on the Cobra I'm making. It's typically referred to as either a CSX4000.

Anyway, here's a diffuse and normal for both the wheel alloy and tyre tread. They're all 512 x 512.

    Here it is in UDK.

Here's how the whole package is looking so far.

Still working from now and then on this project. I've rearranged a few lines and polys, alongside making a highpoly of a seat for a normal map bake.

    Bump

Remade wheels in Quixel, and had a look at the bodywork flow in Marmoset.
