"Disney Interactive has laid off roughly 700 employees, according to a New York Times report. The cuts represent 26 percent of the company's global workforce."
Fuck man, I read this earlier and just saw that it effects one of my best friends, though she doesn't work in games. Sad stuff. I hope everyone lands on their feet.
My current contract expires in three weeks. Nice to know I'll now be competing with an additional 700 people.
Here's hoping these folks land on their feet - that's a stupendous quantity of layoffs. I suspect that's a significant percentage of the industry as a whole.
ambershee, while it is a crap ton of people I am curious on the number that actively had to do with games. My friend that got laid off managed ABC ads for Hulu. While I'm sure there were a number of people working in games, i don't think it was 700 3d modelers and programmers. Large swatch.
Disney Interactive Studios (as mentioned in the article) is specifically their games division - I don't think they're responsible for things like Hulu adverts. It's not unlikely that more than just DIS staff got cut though

But seriously this is sad news, i hate and love Disney, damn choices.
Sry to those affected by this.
...idk what to say anymore this is nuts.
Statistically, it feels like I'm going to be laid off at least once in this industry. Ugh. I hope everyone affected will land a job ASAP.
Sorry for everyone affected. This shouldn't have to happen over and over again.
*cries self to sleep tonight*
