GDC: Convincing Others That It's Needed

I work at a startup company right now, and us developers are trying to convince the guy that signs the checks that GDC--along with other game-related conventions like Pax--are one of the things that integral to success. We're having mixed results with trying to convince him, I think...

So! I thought I'd try and get a bit of outside advice/opinions.

Has GDC helped companies that you work for and do you think it's integral to a companies success? I.E. getting out there, talking to people, networking. Etc.

Let me know you're stories with it.

Can't really comment on a large scale company type deal, but I'd say that GDC is absolutely integral to the success of a small start up. GDC, IGDA, and SIGGRAPH are all major conferences that you guys should attend. PAX is more important once you have content to show to the general masses.

Convince him that the connections you can make at GDC will help grow awareness of the company and make connections that can only help in the future.

Can you tell us what connections you are talking about? Press? Publishers? Fellow developers who you can hire? I mean tickets may be expensive if you live overseas.

From what I've heard that the real meat of GDC are panels and talks.
