question about those game cover arts

i'm always curious about the creation process of those fine detailed illustrations on the cover (also on lots of marketing, advertising materials), especially those AAA titled games, like battlefield 4, or the latest example, Thief 4, they all look like a perfect mixture of 3d and hand-painted illustration, and there's very little info about this niche area, we don't get to know some star illustrators unlike 3d modelers, concept artists or animators; i suppose you paint over some high polys out of zbrush and do lots of Photoshops? anyone here works/worked as a game illustrator who is specialized in this area?
