You know you love PC Build Threads

Greetings,

So, yeah, another one of these threads. I haven't been around here much as of late, as I got quite disheartened - a string of rejections, and a general dryness of the art job pool in the area, you know the story...

But I can't resist the calling, and I'm looking to spend a rather humble amount of money, if possible, on something of bare bones machine for Max, Mudbox, PS, UDK, and probably frequent breaks for Skyrim.

Important stuff: gotta have an SSD. After using the completely silent Chromebook as my primary machine while I was doing non-demanding work, I can't stand the idea of going back to regular hard drives with all those moving parts and stuff. Also I need to be BRUTAL, as I really can't spend much. My max max MAX budget is UK £450-500 ish, but I want to keep cost decently low, considering I will have to adorn it with necessary cables, devices, delivery service that allows for my shifts.

I've only ever used laptops or my old PC build which was kind of a monster (but a dust magnet and such a power drain that I had to get rid of it or find somewhere else to live...), so I'm not sure if the ensemble of budget parts I'm thinking about will do what I command. Basically, if I can build environments and have them look at least a little like it could have come from RAGE or something, mission accomplished.
  • Either i3-4130 or Pentium Dual Core G3420? (Need to be frugal)
  • H81M-E mobo (for the small, cheap case)
  • 8GB RAM
  • Either GTX 650 or GT 640? (again, watching the bank account)
  • 120GB SSD
  • Corsair 550W PSU

Many thanks in advance, as I'm having a touch of trouble getting worthwhile opinions in other corners of the internet.

i would cut the SSD and use the spare change from that to get a better processor or something. You'll find that 120 GB goes VERY fast and if you're on a tight budget it's just not worth it.

I'm with rev. If you're looking to save cash, be real with yourself: That SSD is basically a luxury item

But the delicious speed gains and solid-stateyness... although it makes sense. Having a standard HDD (500Gb) makes a slightler better CPU affordable, it seems.

Any opinions on the choices of CPU and GPU?
My previous experience was with using some i5 processor and a GTX 660, both obviously did a pretty amazing job, but I haven't had any experience with the ones in my price range - I had no idea 3GHz Pentium Dual Cores were a thing.. and I have no idea regarding what the G3420 or i3 + GT 640 or GTX 650's limits would be

you could go with a gtx 750 and save money on the PSU. Do you live in the US? Microcenter has great motherboard+processor combo deals.

For the case, look into antec which has some models that include a good quality earthwatts PSU. Most of them are 380 w I think, which may or may not be enough for a 750.

I'm building on a budget too, the key is patience, waiting for sales. Make sure you check out pcpartpicker.com, it's been an invaluable tool for me.

This site is kinda fun for reference, though I would switch the build components a bit:

I'd try to go with GTX 750 Ti/GTX 660 and i3 if possible. The GTX 750 Ti can run off a 350+ watt PSU.

Thanks for all input so far
Here's a small revision that puts me close to my max budget:
    • Enigma Micro-ATX Case
    • Intel Core i3-4230 @ 3.4GHz
    • 8GB RAM
    • GeForce GTX 650 @ 1GB
    • 500GB HDD - I can save the SSD for my next build when I'm wealthier
    • Corsair 550W PSU

I would save on RAM, but I've tried working with just 4GB... never again. The GTX 750 ti pushes me just a little too much over my budget.
How would this do with my Max/UDK/Dragon-slaying requirements?

    EDIT:
I should mention, this combination can be acquired for about £470 to 480

That PSU is overpowered. You could get away with 350W.

I got nearly the same machine at home for playing games and doing some 3d stuff. Except I got a i3 3220 and a 2GB Zotac GTX 650ti with a 350W beQuiet straight power PSU and a 2Tb seagate HDD.

The only advance the 750ti gives you would be the lower power consumption. The performance is nearly the same compared to the 650ti.

Okay, so, according to my chosen vendor, I can get a 450W PSU (I don't trust anything lower) and use the saved money to get the GTX 650 2GB model. Total cost of about £480.

.Wiki, how did that particular machine cope with 3D work?

It depends on what you want to do. Modeling for movies and games is no problem. I´m also sculpting with zBrush from time to time and it works pretty well. I did it on my 6 years old thinkpad before so its an extreme improvement :)

Rendering with arnold or vray for sure is slower then on a i5 or i7. But for the stuff I do at home the performance is fine and even Battlefield 3 runs on high graphics settings.
