Not to be outdone by Facebooks 2 Billion Dollar buyout of Oculus Rift, a once-promising VR upstart, Yahoo signed a deal earlier today with the people behind Altergaze, promising to triple their ongoing Kickstarters goal. We think Facebook is betting on the wrong horse, and with too much money, says Yahoo CEO Marissa Mayer. What could a hardware company even do with two billion? It sets a bad precedent and an unrealistic goal for other upstarts who might think they need exuberant amounts of money to get off the ground.
The creatives behind the Altergaze had a relatively simple goal in mind: to bring VR to the mobile space with an inexpensive, low-tech, and versatile hardware solution. You just slide your smartphone in, and youre good to go, says the projects Kickstarter page. The accessory is said to offer 3D stereoscopic images in a high field of view, and is able to use the phones onboard accelerometers to estimate motion.
Most people wouldnt see it as an Oculus Rift competitor, but I think people are missing the forest for the trees, assures Mayer. Mobile is a very dominant platform with an audience that craves immersive experiences, and what the Altergaze has is a focus on convenience and affordability over superfluous extra features.
When asked about the pricing of the acquisition, Mayer explained simply, Essentially we saw their Kickstarter goal and offered to triple it in exchange for Yahoo branding on their product. Im told British pounds dont convert to US dollars one-to-one, but they already agreed to the deal so the monetary logistics are out of our hands at this point.
Altergaze is still allegedly operating independently despite the partnership. To any rumours that were going to brand the product with Yahoos image, I can only say that those claims are false.
