Hey hey,
About time to get some colour and foliage in my portfolio. Not too experienced with it so let's see how it goes! All feedback welcomed, got a lot to learn here.
Maya basic blockout - composition will be something like this but with a different fov / camera rotation:

good progress! I like every 3d art from Lord of the rings or Hobbit.
In my opinion, the grass is too saturated and you can add more color variation. In inspiration image i can see some yellow grass.
But keep goinng. I am looking forward next image of your progress.

I wouldn't say the grass is too saturated. In the movies it's even greener.
I think the door needs to be a bit lower, possibly meet the ground like your ref shot?
It's a great start, I really want to see more !
a little exaggerated but you get the idea.
Thanks for all the great feedback, catching a lot of things I never noticed in the early stages.
Changes
-Adjusted spacing, angle and FOV to try and loosen up the composition.
- Adjusted scale to more hobbit-like for windows
- More block in of lighting (blue shadows, contrast)
Added a new bush mesh... not sure if I've gotten the scale of the twig vs leaf right, something doesn't seem right when it's viewed up close, if anyone can spot anything amiss with it let me know. I'll more then likely be adjusting the branch again and scaling down the twig.

Good idea, I'm going for a brick and stucco variation so I'll try to see how I can add some depth and keep it believable, thanks for the feedback!
@ANP
A hobbit would never be able to get up there! Good idea, lowered it a little in the latest shot for now.
@Shogun3D
I slacked off on hobbit scale, thanks for catching that, gonna add a hobbit base mesh in for the future props me thinks.
@All
Thanks again for all the comments. I'll try and breakdown my process (when stuff actually comes out good) in the future, at the moment It's a lot of trial and error with most the foliage for me.

In terms of composition, the eye is lead off to the far right and dumped in the background. There's nothing bringing it back to the front door.
More composition playing, tightening up areas so there's no major gaps for the eye to wonder, still seeing what works best for this small focused area. A lot of diffuse only with temp specs for now, getting the diffuse down for the photo-sourced assets just to define some colour and detail.
Tree is just the plant scaled up, purely for visualization. Still in the early phases but getting first pass colours into the scene, a lot more framing foliage will fill the sides eventually.
In the grand scheme of things the scene is about 20% along the way at the moment.
