So, I'm having a lot of trouble these days with characters. The pipeline, the process, the everything.
Allow me to walk you by the current process. I start in Zbrush. I make the body. (And head, but let's focus on the body for now)
I play around with that for a while. Lotsa dynamesh action. Once I am happy with the core dynamesh I subdivide it and apply detail. After that I do the texturing.
Export the texture and the high poly. Make a low poly. Bake the base texture and normal map in Xnormal. What I end up with is
Well, first of it seems I forgot to do the boots. But just in general. It's a mess. It looks horrible. Dreadful.
Any good tutorials out there? any immediate errors? Please poke holes and destroy all egos. I want to improve. As long as I get to know how to do better alongside what I did wrong, I'm happy.

More importantly you need some reference material to aid you in defining some of the objects you are trying to create and that includes the character. Look up some anatomy references to help on getting some of the proportions right for your character even if he is clothed. Reference is king and you need to find and research reference materials to get at least a decent looking character. I highly recommend looking up some Eat 3d and 3d Motive tutorials as well as Youtube videos on 3d character creation. You have the whole internet at your disposal to find the resources needed to learn the stuff. The rest is just practicing everyday on your sculpts and learn from your mistakes.
