Unwrap Issues

Hi all,

I'm trying to unwrap part of a knife handle in 3DS Max using the Unwrap UVW tool - it's a fairly simple mesh, I've unwrapped half of it using the planar, align to Y axis and then relax by face angle but when I select the other side it screws up the mesh.

I've attached a screenshot showing what I mean. My normals are all facing outwards.

Any ideas how to fix this? And also - is this the best way to unwrap something like this? Would be grateful of any advice.

Try mirroting those selected faces in the unwrap window, then relax again. I usually see that when it's gotten itself turned 'inside out'.

    That did the trick :)

I'm taking the mesh into Mudbox and sculpting some more detail but when I bring it back into 3DS Max and bake out the map, all the detail is screwed up in the corner, I think it's because my UV map isn't relaxed enough around the edges but I'm not sure..

Can anyone give me some advice on the best way to unwrap something as simple as the model in the screenshot above?

It may be easier to handle the unwrapping by doing a box unwrap so each side it its own island, then stitch them together, so it's like when you see a cardboard box unfolded.

I can see in the picture the Uvs are overlapping and relaxing can help. Also The first button under Reshape Elements shapes the selected UVs into quads, which is a really good starting point for the geometry you have.
