Can I use a stamp image with the flood function?

I have a pattern for sculpting that I would like to apply evenly around a cylindrical object in Mudbox. I thought I would be able to achieve this by applying it as a stamp image with sufficient stamp spacing and then using the flood function to effect the whole model. This didn't work though. The result I got instead was just an even bulging effect that occasionally distorted my model in very ugly ways. I tried different strengths without much success.
My question is:
Does the flood function work with stamp spacing?

Curve Tools>Create curve loop> use brush with the stamp> lower your stamp spacing, set direction to Average normal> Right click on the curve and click stroke on curve.
