Maya Hair Viewport Preview

Hello, I've just been messing around with maya hair+mental ray, and I was wondering if there was a faster way to preview the hair in the viewport, even if the appearance isn't accurate(better though if it is). I created a hairsystem and set it to follow my curves. I've cleared my history, and set the position to current and disabled nucleus solver (in hopes of disabling dynamics since it's a still). I've also lowered the display quality. Every time I change a value, it makes my rig cry. I might have a bit too many curves, probably around 15k, but I thought some people use 1:1 curve-hair, so shouldn't this be much lighter in terms of load? It would be neat if anyone could offer tips on how to make things go faster.:poly127:
