Tf2 custom particle effects

Hi guys I want to do a bit of promo work on an item I'm making and was wondering if anyone has any info on making a custom particle effect for tf2? I've seen some people have done it, I'm just not sure where or how!

I realise the chances of getting a custom particle effect added is nil, it's really just for promo shots.
