3ds Max UV Mapping Scale Issue

Hello everyone,

I'm having a strange issue, and this isn't the first time I've had it with 3ds Max 2013, and I haven't been able to find any solutions anywhere - in fact, I can't seem to find anyone who's shared this issue. I traditionally use Maya, so I might just be misunderstanding something, here.

I've attached several pics below outlining the problem. The issue is that, for the diffuse map to even show up correctly, I have to scale the UVs to hundreds of times what the size should actually be to get it to look correct. However, the specular map doesn't have this issue at all, so when I render the specular map is tiled hundreds of times while the diffuse appears to be the correct scale. This is very frustrating - I'm just doing some very basic texturing.

As you can see, to get the diffuse map to be the correct size, I had to scale it up massively:

As you can see, that tiny space in the lower left is the actual UV space...

Yet here's how it looks on the object...

Finally, you can see how the specular texture and the diffuse texture, though the exact same scale, are having their UVs be interpreted completely differently in terms of scale.

So... can anyone help me? This is driving me crazy. I'm just making a silly little sign for a friend...
