How should I go about modelling this simple organic object?

Hey Polycount! I've been wanting to model the Gumball guardian character from Adventure Time recently, but I'm not sure how to do so. Here is what it looks like:

And here's a 3d Model someone already made of it: http://fc00.deviantart.net/fs71/f/2013/096/c/6/gumball_guardian_by_vinigri-d60odk3.jpg

I can model the hard parts, but I'm not sure how to do the organic ones. Here is what I've tried so far: http://i.imgur.com/WA3molG.png?1?9351 Neither seem to be good.

I'd appreciate any insight whether it be that you think I'm going over my head and should do other organic objects first, or a tutorial video that you think could help me. Thanks in advance!

Do you have Zbrush? If yes, than you can easily make that using zspheres. If not you can do that by something similiar to blender's skin modifier .

It's a sphere, a cone, and cylinders. That's as simple as anything is ever going to get.
You're not supposed to connect the shapes yet. Just lay out the primitives, then pose them according to the concept, then finally make the transitions.

Thanks for the answer, perna! Don't get me wrong, I can easily make the individual parts. It's the transitions that I'm having trouble with. The screenshot of what I've tried so far were my attempts at transitions, but they look messy which is why I'm asking this question in hopes of finding a better way.
