Hey there!
First thread on here, I'm a relative noobie at 3D. I'm trying to get better and am currently in the process of making a small scene from a comic called Supertron.
I am currently working on a test piece (Sign) to try and get the style right in 3DS Max and I've sort of got the intended style but it needs work. I might eventually shove this all in UDK so I guess I'll need to work with the shaders? Anyway, I basically want the render to give certain outlines thick black lines, which I've tried to do with Ink 'n' Paint but I want the line to vary in thickness to imitate a pen stroke.
Any ideas? Here is what I have so far:
If all goes well, I'll make a thread as a work in progress diary

An another option that could work everywhere is to duplicate the geometry, and flipping it. Then you simply add a black material to it and its done.
This could work in UDK too. There, you have many options, like the previously mentioned method, or an edge detecting postprocess effect, or a shader based solution, which isn't really easy to make. I made a downloadable cartoon shader for UDK a few days ago, but the current version of it wouldn't work with your mesh because currently it works only with organic/rounded meshes. Here it is:

I will make a version very soon that will work on angular/hard edged meshes too. But you will still need to duplicate the geometry, and the shader will do the cartoony diffuse, and changing the "size" of the outline mesh so it will be bigger when you view if from further, and smaller when viewing from closer.
* I like your idea about the size variation on the outlines, thank you! I will implement this in the next version (s)
It mentions that the Ink n Paint lines could be modified with a noise map. What is it and how would I apply it to make the line look drawn and varied? I already have the varied ink width selected but that doesn't seem to change anything in a straight line.
