applying matcaps with zapplink

So I’m running to a bit of a problem, so I’m using Zapplink to help me use Photoshop tools to improve the quality of the characters that I painted. Then I came up with a great idea to copy the reference pictures on to the textured picture. That way I can give the real texture matcap qualities. However the problem that I’m facing is that I can’t copy one layer in to another without putting that copy in to a new layer in photoshop. So next I would naturally merge, But when I do that it breaks the zapplink with photoshop and zbrush, even if I rename the layer the same way the old one was named. So I need to find a way to copy an image from photoshop in to another without creating a layer. Any advice on how to get this done guys

Adding a photoshop layer shouldn't be enough to break zapplink if everything gets merged back to status quo before saving the file. As a test (using one of the default sphere scenes + projection master and zapplinked to photoshop), are you still unable to paint on a new layer that gets merged down to layer1 (be sure to preserve the mask as well)?
