reading books is great because it takes you off into some other world that you have no choice but to imagine in detail Sometimes I draw the characters Im reading about
yeah books, films, art in general is good.
But for me, games is the best I think. I play them but at a certain point I just want to quit and go back making 3d art because I feel like I could do my own game with my own art and that is so motivating.
Audiobooks can be great too, as you can more or less read while you work.
Recently listening to the mote in gods eye and the gripping hand audio books again. If the Roman/American/British empire in space sounds awesome to you check it out.
From what I hear books are a great way (and pointed out by others here).. I think because of the ability to naturally interpret words differently as Ged said than say other peoples envisioned art direction through movies and anything with images already created.
I just fell over a really inspirational guy named Hanabusa. He directs videos inspired by computer games and the last 4 videos made me a fan.

books, great part about books is you can create what you read, and its completely your interpretation.
Also just seeing and experiancng a lot of things.
if you ever get chances to travel do so, and let your self absorb everything possible about the culture your in and the visualises you see.
Also just building up a great visual library in your mind, is so so useful in the creation process. So is understanding how things work and how the environment around them effects it all.
Creating a visual reference library - gather any pictures or art (of any type or category) that catches your eye or stimulates your imagination, you'll also be able to use it in any projects for inspiration.
This may sound weird but cooking new food does it for me. I'm really not much of a cook but sometimes I like to mix things up a bit and make new things. I've made a reuben sandwich pizza before, couldn't even find a recipe online
psychedelic Drugs, going outside, reading wikipedia, looking at pictures.
I dunno I haven't ever found the creativity part too hard, creativity is the easy part, the hard part is seeing it through smashing it out, polishing it, and finishing it, getting inspired seems easy, I could go out and see a building and go wow look at all the modular aspects of it, or before I go to sleep get a thousand ideas of what I should do, and every now and then in the morning I actually remember them.
if I really needed to get some creativity going I would just lay down and not quite nap, but rest the body, close the eyes and let the mind go so often all the information coming at us from the computer, the cellphones, twitter the pattern on your wall, the music in your ears, I think you are always ready to have unique thoughts and ideas, you just need to be able to listen, hear yourself think for awhile.
I also like to have a hot bath in complete darkness to think, thats one I enjoy, you get a good soak, get to relax, and be alone with your thoughts.
I would honestly get a sensory deprivation chamber if I could afford it, would for sure like to try one out in the future.
i really wish i were you. Right now i have to do some sci-fi space stations, and sometimes i just sit for a whole day, trying to come up with intresting designs that doesn't suck. Making it happen and polishing is the easy thing, it's just the matter of time.

Just put on some awesome music, Google a bunch of different sci-fi games and movies and sketch out as many ideas as you can. Worry about if the idea is stupid after you already have them down.
- Draw from life. Carry a little sketch book and quickly sketch anything that interests you.
- Do life drawing, either find a local group that does it once a month or more. There's Dr Sketchy's in some places, other groups in different cities. You can ask around to find them. I found some on reddit, just go to your cities subreddit.
- Go to local galleries. A lot of cities have a monthly gallery hop or opening where you can go to a bunch of different ones.
