Polycount dota IRC channel

hey guys, I love all the communication and shared knowledge of this subforum so I decided maybe why not have an IRC available too if people want to talk about the workshop or have any questions or want to share stuff, etc.

Feel free to join, on freenode.net I'm in the #polycountdota channel. Anyone interested in making this a 'thing'? Might be a fun/useful resource.

Jokes aside, I really hope this becomes a "thing", because I love IRC and I love Polycount, so why the hell not!?

We already got the bangouts though where we can share screens and chat. It is limited to 10 people though.

The Hangout acts pretty much like an IRC channel, usually, there's only typing going on and no talking. It's a shame though that we can only get a max of 10 people into the hangout.

Yeah I'll have to pop in there sometime, I usually do the regular polycount hangout, I should try the dota one.

but this is for like an anything thing, plus as you said, no limit to how many can join

That's why IRC is great! The hangout is usually either full or empty, so having another place with no user limits where we can talk freely is pretty awesome.

i loved irc, til i stopped using it due to no channel i would be interested in, now i can go back to my old love, gonna go get a client i think i love irc

Really quick heads up: I found this super helpful Reddit thread with some recommended IRC clients. I'm currently using HexChat, which seems to be one of the best. Other options are the good old mIRC, Pidgin or this website.

For someone like me, the google hangouts is a little intimidating. I feel like google+ doesn't have the same accessibility as IRC, and IRC isn't limited. I'll definitely try to hang out in the channel from time to time!

Yeeeeears ago there was even a built-in IRC client straight within the main Polycount page ... Indeed, a great way to share knowledge, and makes you feel right at home

I think the hangouts and the IRC wont be too much competition. I'll probably just be in IRC most/all the time to give instant help or crit, and I'll try to populate the hangout when actually working.

The hangouts could complement the IRC - they could be the place where people who want to stream work without using Twitch could go to share stuff. And the IRC could be used to coordinate multiple hangouts too.

Really do wish the Hangouts would allow no limit to chat connections though. Would be cool there was like maybe 10-15 streams allowed but unlimited text connections or something.

bounchfx - you should assign some mods in the channel. so if you leave people still have some control of what happens. not that its needed atm but you never know

guys.. register your nick so we can hand out permanent rights everytime you logg on. if i remember correct if we idle long enough even the channel can make it permanent so we get a bot in there.

u need 5 people to be in channel at the same time, then u can call the bot with some special command and the channel will be permanent after. at least this is what i remember from 10years ago o.O

For those who don't know, you can register by sending /msg nickserv register PASSWORD EMAIL, then after confirming the email and everything, you just send /msg nickserv identify PASSWORD every time you log on, OR if you're using HexChat, you can click on Edit... at the Network List window with freenode selected, and just set it up like this.

There are lots of other cool stuff on HexChat that I'd recommend doing, such as enabling alerts for new messages (you can set that globally on Settings>Preferences>Chatting>Alerts), you can also add custom sounds, change the view to tabs instead of tree on the interface preferences, use some awesome custom themes or create your own. It's a pretty simple and minimal IRC client, but it's highly customizable, and I highly recommend you guys to use that instead of the web thingy.

I'm on every night when I get home, and do reply to whatever 8-). but they been dragging me into the hangouts so lately I'm on both haha. It's not meant to be a place of active discussion 24/7 so much as a resource for discussing dota stuff, asking questions or getting support
