There's nothing wrong with scifi, but this particular door is very bland and uninteresting.
And the model is pretty bad, too. There are a bunch of loops that can be terminated and you have far too many polygons in the tube things compared to the doorposts.
Just something from personal experience - unless you are particularly talented at concepting as you go, settle on a concept first or else you will either waste a bunch of time revising things or just the overall concept won't be strong.
Otherwise, yeah, nothing wrong with sci-fi. Everyone is doing hand painted shit too, but you don't see anyone being like 'do something different from hand-painted art'
@jovcem it pretty much like sushi was saying. My last project was a medieval environment, and since sci-fi is one of my favorite themes I figured I would try one.
@Snader I see what you mean with the polys on the tubes. I will reduce them for the low poly version. If you have any suggestions for things to add to the door please feel free to let me know.
@Count Vader yeah I'm not really all that good at concept design so I'm just trying to concept as I go.
The upper corners of your door look weird...the inner curved part.
I kinda wanna second what Count Vader said. Designing stuff as you go is really tough...and you seem to be jumping into small details very quickly. Consider finding/creating a concept, and maybe blocking out the space and defining what your going to do before hitting up the noodly bits.
Quick update. Currently trying to come up with a some concept sketches like Count Vader and gsokol are suggesting. Since I'm not really all that good at concept design, if anyone has any tips or suggestions please let me know.
Any kind of sci-fi is a lot of different types of architecture. Just choose one that you'd like to do and stick to it. Maybe choose a movie visual that you like and see if you can recreate it.

maybe he's doing sci-fi because he just did a fantasy scene, or a modern scene, or a medieval scene, or a post-apocalyptic scene, or a forest scene

@JadeEyePanda Sure. I'm looking to create any kind of sci fi environment that I can.
