Maya Particle Instancer Help

Eh there,

My problem: I make a cylinder prim for a tree trunk, and emit a basic particle from surface. Then I select my custom branch geometry and click on the particle instancer to replace all the emitted particles with my branch geo.... The problem is nothing really happens, even after refreshing the playback button. It simply makes the node with no instance object shown in the attribute editor, even though the geo was visibly selected in the instancer options before clicking create.

Any help would be great!
