Happy 20th, DOOM

It's a day late but yesterday was the 20th birthday of Doom!

I had no internet at the time so I jealously read magazine articles about all the PWADS people were making until I got my hands on the Doom Hacker's Guide and started making my own levels. I don't have many Doom modding stories to share because I wasn't plugged into the online community, Quake was the game that changed my life but Doom set me down that path so it holds a special place in my heart.

I was a kid when it first came out, but it had a profound impact on my life. My dad had it on his computer and I'd watch him play, then when he was done, he'd let me play. I never got into modding it or anything, but I give it credit as the catalyst that got me into horror movies, death metal and games. I have a poster from The Ultimate Doom that was in the original packaging framed and in my basement. Such an awesome game, I might play it after work now.....

I pretty much owe my current livelihood to iD. Shortly after the release of Doom, the game that introduced me into the great and wonderful world of computers. Little did I know then that 20 years later I'd have worked with a ton of people in industry, work as an artist on ThreewaveCTF, get a BFA in Computer Animation, worked in the video game industry for a short time and now would be programming for phones that are more powerful than the PCs we had back then to play Doom on..

Making Doom levels is why I'm working in games today. Doom will always be special to me.

I saw Doom running on a friend's 14" beige monitor back when the shareware came out and it blew me away. I saved my cash, bought a £1,200 machine and never looked back.

I remember playing doom on a waay to slow pc, watching it strain as the game chugged along with choppy framerates, but it was still a blast. I mean you could shoot through window into the other room.. INTO THE OTHER ROOM!

watching that wad file load was a torture tho, cmon I wanna play!
Doom also introduced me.. and probably a lot of others to multiplay, I remember playing it with my brother and a friend on 3 PC's hooked up via IPX and coax cables and what not, cooping the campaign and blasting eachother to smithereens with the bfg.

great stuff and I can pop this sucker in any day .

I have an even stronger mental/emotional connection to Quake. That game was my life for several years - playing it, making levels, writing tools and editors, being in the community. Just a killer time. And now I make games for a living. Hooray!

Love them all The one that I enjoyed the most was Doom 64 though, so moody! And loved the reworked sprites and the level design.
