Hey guy im texturing a robotic cat and i am having trouble trying to hand paint a metal texture. If anyone could give me a tutorial or some good tip that would be great.
If this metal is super sleek sci fi where it's mostly reflective then its more on the shader and smooth normals than the texture.
If this metal is scratched and coarse, then it's more on the spec map and somewhat with how you paint the marks and knicks.
If this is unlit then reference the type of metal you are painting and study how lighting is interacting with it.
In future, please specify your problem to get a better answer. I can't read your mind so if any of the above is completely useless then give some details on what's going on.
There are a lot of different links that talk about hand painting if you scroll down a bit.

This link might be a better example to WoW style, it may not look exactly like it but it's the steps to get to it. And yes, it's a stone, but their metal is honestly not far off.
