New PC Monitor Suggestions

Hey guys I'll cut to the chase. Christmas is coming up and what better time than to ask Santa for a new monitor. See, I recently got a new PC that is far better than what I used to have but I kept my monitor cause I thought, hey it's a good monitor and nothing wrong with it.

Buuuuut I've noticed some problems and perhaps you can give me the answer. So to start whenever I game, unless I'm using v-sync, I get a strobe like effect which is very annoying. I assume this is because the monitor is 60Hz but something else I don't have much knowledge on is connections. Right now I'm using a and please don't facepalm, VGA cable. Like I said I'm not that knowledgeable in the monitor field :)

So my PC is rolling a Nvidia GTX 780, 32 GB Ram, I7-4770 and I'm using a Dell 24" st2410 monitor. Using 1920x1080 at the moment.

So really I need to know whether it's worth buying a new monitor. UDK & games strobe quite badly and I read that modern GFX cards no likey VGA cables but I was hoping someone on here can clear that up.

But to be honest, if there are better monitors out there then I'm willing to get since I don't have anything else I want for Christmas :P I saw a thread that had some interesting suggestions but it was last year so that's why I made this new thread.

So boys and girls, any good monitors you would like to suggest? And what cable input is recommended for gaming / modelling / UDK'ing. Are 144HZ monitors worth it? Like I said there's so many topics on the net but I need refined answers.

I have a ASUS 144hz monitor and I think it's worth it if you have the money. You're rig can handle 144hz in anything really. It's game changing for playing games at least. Modelling is even more smooth.

I have this and recommend it. People say 144hz monitors colors are bad, etc but to be honest they aren't bad with the proper tweaking. They are costly though.

Any asus IPS is decent for gaming because of tracefree that only they have. I have used many proffestional monitors, all the Asus proart series, the asus 1440p ips, 27 inch and 30 inch dell IPS's as well as the NEC ips screens, Asus rules them all in pretty much everything out of the box and the addition of tracefree makes them pretty decent for gaming. Obviously they are not awesome like a 144hz or 1ms monitor, but they are great overall when it comes to multipurpose screens.

    I have this one http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16824236294

    but this came out recently

I also have this one http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16824236332

as a secondary. I would highly reccomend all of them. The 27 inchers are going to be the best due to the resolution giving your a higher dpi as well as screen space to work with due to the resolution.

This is how a 1080p image looks on my screen, so imagine the advantage of workspace that you can have over a 1080p screen. http://puu.sh/5lMEy.png

144hz is worth it if your a FPS gamer. It's night and day, even if your fps avg is only about 60

However, if you can wait it out till early? next year, there are new monitors incorporating "G-Sync" http://www.geforce.com/hardware/technology/g-sync/technology

It's basically V-sync, but without the lag. Industry Vets ie "John Carmack" are touting it as the next big thing for gaming monitors

if you're a professional artist you owe it to yourself to get a proper IPS display. TN panels found in "gamer" monitors are meant to respond very quickly, but have piss poor viewing angles, color, black levels etc. do not trust TN monitors for color sensitive work.

the latest revision Dell U2413 is the best all rounder right now. true 8 bit IPS, wide gamut with accurate SRGB emulation, hardware calibration--plus it has low input lag for games.

Thank you all for your suggestions. I'm gonna get a cup of tea and digest this info :)

Alright so based on the info I've decided to go for this one however, I'm going to wait till the g-sync tech is released and wait for Asus to install it in their monitors next year.

In the meantime just gonna get a DVI cable I guess. Merry Christmas Habboi :P

Also I respect that IPS monitors are great for artists but I think I'd benefit more from a gaming monitor.

Racer brings up great points.. I just got the 2412s instead of the 2413s as they were a bit cheaper.. Just picked up two of them and love them.

I use a vertical Dell 2412m to model on. Great monitor.

My horizontal monitor is a Korean Crossover 27q. Love it to death and about about to buy another to replace my Dell.

    Secret tip:

Check out the Yamakasi Catleap or similar on Ebay (But ebay only)

They come straight from Korea where the panels are made, are dirt cheap (around 300-350 euro) but have no features whatsoever. Normal ports, volume thats it for most.

Thing is, they are spectacular 27" S-IPS with amazing values and calibration and have 2550x1440 resolutions. They use the same panel in the 1000$ Apple Cinema Displays.

Bought mine nearly a year ago and really happy with it as a graphic designer where it counts. The new ones have 120 Hz aswell and can be overclocked and all that stuff. Just keep in mind that 1440P needs easily 30-40% more performance in games.

Just picked up the same monitor a few weeks ago. For $550 it's great and offers a ton of on screen adjustments.

Also. You'll never go back to 1080p after working with 1440p for a few days. The difference is incredible.
