But I am trying to do some hand painted textures and trying to see what it looks like in 3DS max on my model, not just on a PSD document, and the lighting problem is bugging me and really obstructing my work flow.
What version of 3ds Max are you using? Have you installed all the latest service packs?
The problem doesn't look like lighting, it looks like the normals are incorrect. I think I remember doing something like adding two Normal modifier or add an Edit Normal modifier, select all the normals, and press Reset.
I'm pretty sure that looks like the 2 default lights problem. Looks like crap on lowpoly stuff.
Anyway, you can set the viewport to flat shading, set the ambient light to white (press 8!) or set the material self-illum to 100. Whatever makes more sense to you!
