Floating island environment

Hello! I'm just getting started with a 6 day project.

The goal is to make a small, grassy 3D environment island with a couple of things on it; an old stone wall, a burnt patch of ground, a small burnt tree, an open chest filled with gold coins and maybe some old stone arches and a stone pathway.

I will keep the polycount fairly low for everything, I'm thinking maybe 3-4 k triangles for the floating island and at most 1000 tris per prop.

This is the first time I do any kind of environment and I feel a little lost. Lighting and composition is not one of my stronger sides. I also don't know how to texture the island, I will probably just unwrap it and give it a unique texture but it would be cool if I could learn how to paint terrain with repeating textures.

I've gotten started on the island part in Zbrush, here's what it looks like right now. Just trying to make the rock look like rock at the moment.

The normal map turned out okay I guess, but I think I may have to size it up to 2048 pixels instead of 1024. I should propably have tried to build this modularly from the beginning, to get better texture res. If there is time over I might redo it, but I have to move on.

How large is this island? looks like it could use more rock detail if you're going for a larger scale. And if you get a chance to sculpt in more detail maybe you should bake out your maps even larger than 2048 that way you wont have to rebake your maps for resolution.

Tadao215: Thanks for the feedback. I agree, it has too little detail to look large enough, and also, it would take up an insane amount of texture space, which I can't spare (I have planned to get everything on one 2048 texture).

I'm scrapping that island and trying to find a good way to tile the ground texture instead. The biggest problem I have right now is that I need two ground textures, grassy and burnt, and I don't know how I'm going to blend them.

NomadSoul2501: That seems like exactly what I was looking for! Thank you :D Maybe I'll give it a try this weekend.

I decided not to vert paint because I wanted to keep all the textures on one map, so I just went ahead and fit something together. I'll try to cover up some of the most visible seams with planes of different kinds. I also got a tree in there (with a normal map that hasn't been applied in the screenshot) and some boxes representing the chest and some walls.

Heres what the texture map looks like right now:

The grass texture seems too large and the cliffs are just thrown in there (they're both going to get normal maps eventually as well). I'm hoping to get all of this slightly better looking once I throw in some more vegetation and other details...

Okay so I've been working on this for a while now and hopefully I'll be able to wrap it up soon. This is what things are looking like.

    The lighting is terrible and I'm going to re-arrange the entire scene, but these are the assets I have atm. There's a chest on the way, I'm working on a sculpt of it;

Can't say I'm entirely happy with it, but my deadline is getting closer ): Any tips would be appreciated!

Here's how I'm thinking of laying everything out:

I'm thinking of having the caracter standing posed with her shield up by the chest. I can change the pose, but I'm mostly trying to figure out where she is going to stand.

In any case, I'm hoping the result will turn out for the better :p Once again, tips and pointers are greatly appreciated!

Cool to hear that I could actually be of some help to anybody, I'm feeling pretty lost myself. Hope you'll come up with something awesome and show it to us! :D

SohaibTGame: Thanks! That seems useful, although I have only sculpted in Zbrush so far. I saved it to my reference folder :D

Project is over, here's how it turned out. The character was made earlier.

Not entirely sure about the presentation, but I don't think I'll be able to change it in time for the deadline. Maybe some other time :3
