issues with baking in max2012

ive been following this tutorial to learn how to explode bake, and even though ive followed it to the letter im getting some horrible glitches i dont know how to fix:

after following that, exploding everything and hitting render, i end up with this map:

not good. and i dont know whats gone wrong or how to fix it.

im really not understanding whats happening here, and how can i fix it?

ive very little experience with baking, so im not sure if this looks correct, but this is my 256x256 test bake after tweaking some settings and rebaking multiple times:

is that how it should look, or is that wrong? previous bakes that resulted in the flat normal map didnt have any shading and everything on the screen appeared completely black, so will this result in proper normals?


any help would be greatly appreciated!
