Creating skies?

Is there any good resources/tutorials for creating interesting skies that dosent rely on JUST a sky dome? There are tutorials on this website in the wiki but all of them are relatively the same as in they just take a sky panorama and apply it to a dome, or something similar to that. Surely there has to be other tutorials on this subject that cover more than just that?

with that workflow you can paint your sky however you want.
