Rendering Help with My Logo

Hey Polycount,

I'm fairly new to modeling and I could use some help with rendering my personal logo. I mocked up this logo idea for a class a while back, and wanted to bring it into 3d.

My concept is pretty basic, a simple cube that has my initials [JL] in it. What I intend on doing is having strong rays of light shining through the glass from inside the cube, but I've been having some issues.

Modeled and rendered in 3ds Max. I tried experimenting with the material editor a bit and got some pleasing results with the glass, but definitely needs some work

Here is my progress so far.

I'm mostly looking for rendering advice, but critiquing the logo is still appreciated.

your view is not straight, else the edges would connect
Aside, it looks like a fine base, Id add the rest in photoshop and crank up the contrast, its too low, or crank up the main light a bit

@Shrike Thanks for the feed back. My goal is to do as little as possible in Photoshop. I do plan working on it in PS, but I mainly wanted practice in rendering.

well if you plan on having light blasting from the center of it...I would definitely get a light in there. I think something not translating well to 3d is that your concept seems to have white in between the black and blue, not transparent. You may also want to crank up the self-illumination on your materials to get rid of some of the lights and darks if you want.

Consider putting a gap or break in between your letters. The logo is working in 2d because I can see there is a distinct J and L but in 3d it looks like a black cube with a blue uneven corner.

That also looks like a perspective render, not an iso render. (Either make a camera and turn on orthographic, or leave orthographic off, set your camera FOV to something small, like maybe 10, then bring the camera out far enough to see the logo.)

Use grid snapping to line up your camera.

    Have fun :)
