Game Models- One Object or Multiple?

Hey Guys,

First post for me, so bare with me. When I mention certain things below, I'm working with Max in terms of modeling software.

I've been modeling for a bit and from what my education taught me, game models are usually always one object, unless you're counting weapons.

My questions is, are characters supposed to be one object (body, armor/clothing, hair, etc.)? I know the base should be, but what about the other stuff?

From wireframes and downloadable models, I have seen this done two different ways.

The first being what I mentioned above, entirely one object with the body accessories modeled into the actual body and textures do most of the work, or different elements, still one object though.

The second being those accessories are actual separate objects. I have never rigged a character, so I would assume those accessories would be linked to certain parts of the body and move in conjunction with the base model for animation purposes?

I'm not sure if I'm thinking too much into this or not, but it's driving me nuts lol. Hopefully that makes sense, and thank you in advance!

You answered your own question, it can be done multiple ways...

It all depends on how the character is interacting or interacted with, in game. Does this character change clothes? Does he have multiple costumes? Are the different clothes new meshes or just re-skins?

If you're going to model a character with clothes as a seperate mesh, make sure that you show that in the mesh break down, otherwise they might think you are completely wasting tri's and texture space.

    Thank you Moosebish,

that makes sense. I was starting to get confused a bit from seeing the different ways of doing it. Our character for our project will not be doing anything that you mentioned above, so I'll go with the one-piece to make things easier for myself when texturing.
