Humanoid: skinning with 5 bones

For exercise and study purpose I'm making a low poly human character with only 5 bones (body, legs, arms) with harsh weight (1 weight per bones). I'm toying with edge case to learn and develop a better intuition for more complex modeling case.

I'm currently using a gingerbread man for test and have had success with the legs. Of course shoulder are where the challenge rest as usual. So far rest pose, hand's forward and hand's up is good enough, however let say the character want to scratch itself and and it fall apart. I have tested various modeling options and get close to something good enough but not quite, and I feel there might be a better set up (assuming I don't need the hand pointing backward). So far tilting the shoulder transition forward get some close result but mess up rest pose badly.

I was wondering if someone has got there and had some tips to get it done as good as possible?
