Maya 2013 weird obj/sub-obj selection

Greetings everyone!
I spent last week on studying Maya, everything is perfect but there is one thing that drives me crazy! When I have more then one object in my scene and trying to select one (which covers another), instead of select the object I point on Maya select an object that is behind it! I can keep clicking jillion times on obj I need instead it will highlight an obj behind...
In Max I could click multiple times on one object this gave me the opportunity to select every object behind one by one. How to turn it on in Maya?
P.S. How to assign switching sub-object levels (vertex,poly,edges) on 1-4 keys?
