Hello all.

A while ago I created this interior scene in 3DS Max (Link) and now I've spruced it up a little and threw it in UDK.

I still feel like there's something not quite right about the lighting and perhaps some of the assets need a little polish. Any comments and crits to help me improve this further, would be great! :)

For me, the light from the fire is too overpowering and unrealistic. In the first shot it's illuminating the ceiling fan, but I can't see light from a fire that small (or that far back in the fire place) hitting the fan at all. If I were you I'd focus on getting a nice glow on the chair and the footrest from the fire and reduce the radius on it. Awesome scene though, great assets! Could you share some texture maps and wireframes? :)

The lighting overall does seem a bit overpowering. I'd tone down the primary light source (the fireplace), while changing its hue and add light sources at each of the gas lights.

The doors seem rather wide, but that might just be an odd camera angle or FoV.

With those old timey wall sconces-the light isn't ever pure white. They're usually a bit dingy around the edges, with a yellowish or 'warm' hue. That white white makes me think of florescent lights in a grocery store. Also, for the chess table-you might want to change the colour of the 'white' checks to something a bit brighter-even if it's ivory, simply because right now the 'white' checks are blending into the table.

Ah, thanks for spotting that. I actually used a modern version of the lamp for the reference and textured it accordingly, but that's been updated now with a yellow-ish tint.

Hey! One thing I thought of while looking at this again. And this is pure aesthetic personal taste so...feel free to disregard. The wall above the fireplace looks...sad. I mean, imagine this is your room. You have your favourite chair, your books, maybe you bring in some wine to drink while reading in front of a cozy fire. The painting is behind your chair, so you can't ever really look at it (not that there's anything wrong with that-the painting fits the wall nicely) and on the huge wall above the fireplace is one eeeeeeny weeeny tiny clock, with huge swaths of space on either side. =( Usually there is something very personal put in that space-because its the focus of the room when you're in the room. Like a treasured momento, or family painting, something large enough that brings the room together and can command the space. =D cheers!

You've raised a really good point there. I wanted to move the painting above the fireplace but as that particular wall isn't very well lit, it might be too dark. I guess another option would be to place a mirror there so the darkness wouldn't be too much of a problem. This is certainly something I need to play around with I think. Thanks for the feedback, much appreciated :)

Hey I'm liking the lighting when the textures are turned off, but i think you really need to adjust the levels on all your textures. The ceiling and carpet and even the books are waaay too white and is really throwing off your lighting. Try muting them down a bit so the textures are all around the same value.

    Cheers for the comment.

From the feedback I've received so far, this will probably be the polish task list:

    - Colour balance of the textures (reduce the white)
    - Adjust the lighting further
    - Adjust the textures of the wall lamps further
    - Place a more interesting prop above the fireplace (maybe light that wall better too)
    - Post-production, but I reckon I should keep this to a minimum as I want to show of the render from the engine as much as possible
    - A possible short video of the environment.

Also here are the high poly models of some of the props:

Once again thanks for all the feedback so far, it has been incredibly helpful :)

The high-poly for the Armchair is a Mudbox sculpt with the base mesh created in Max (image below). The seat, back and the arms were created in Mudbox and the legs and rivets were created in Max.

The other chair is just a simple high-poly model in Max and like many of the high poly models they are split into several elements. Hope that answers your question :)

Hey bud, the first thing i noticed with your scene was a sense of scale. having realistic proportions and metrics can make a huge difference. The door is really throwing me off right from the get go.

I agree with this one. On my end, the wall is practically black near the fireplace and it's also very hard to see any of the detail on the floor.

    Adjust dem levels ;)
