photoshop alternatives

Hello,

I wondering if GIMP is a good alternative to Photoshop. Is it as capable as Photoshop in terms of creating textures? If not what is a good alternative to Photoshop? Any help will be appreciated.

What do you want to do? Paint textures, do concept art, or ... ? Different programs ARE better than Photoshop at specific things (like painting and drawing) but Photoshop is the best all around program that I've found.

There's also the not-quite-free-but-kinda Photoshop CS2 straight from the Adobe website.
