[Max2013] Weird shading/normal issue

As you can see, I'm having a spot of trouble with this trapezoid area that is convinced that it's a recess or shadow or something. I'm using Max 2013 and XoliulShader, and what's baffling is that this is persisting even after I've edited the normal map by hand and made zero difference. It's still there with just the normal map applied, and I am beyond confused...
