WOW Fan Art Mini Project Super Fun Time Extreme!

Hey everyone! Being recently inspired by the awesome WOW art dump earlier in the week, I decided to do a little fan art. My plan is to concept, model and texture a weapon and a shield that looks like it belongs to a specific race in Warcraft. What race you say? Tauren of course because they are the best!

Shield concepts first! For the Horde!


Im leaning towards number 3, but any C&C is always welcome! weapon concepts soon to come.

Sweet idea! I think I might start a thread and do something similar.

I like the 5th shield but none of the weapons really speak to me If I were to pick one, it would be number 1, but I do think they all look "flat." I think bulkier forms could definitely help if you're going for a mace sort of thing

@Selaznog thanks for the feedback and i agree, the weapons weren't really up to snuff. I went back to the drawing board and did some pen and paper sketches. below is the result of my favorite.

It was also brought up by a buddy of mine that these werent really working as a set. so i started working on the weapon and shield together to make them more cohesive. any c&c will be consumed and digested for the warchief.

I like where your final concept ended up going. The first round of weapons hadn't sold me (but I liked your shields). This last set of concepts are better, in my opinion. Can't wait to see more.

Maybe do some more playing with the silhouette of the weapon, right now every line is very straight. Doesn't WOW work with more curvy silhouettes most of the time?

Hey nice variety of concepts you got here! Horde huh? i won't hold it against you :P

I agree with Fenyce you need spend some more time developing the silhouettes if you want to more accurately portray the WoW style. Aim to hit those chunky shapes and curvy silhouettes. I made a super quick draw over on your concept, hope you don't mind, to try and illustrate my point.

@Fenyce and Pixelatedkiwi Thanks for the feedback guys! and you're both totally right about the silhouette stuff. That paintover is super helpful. back to the drawing board for a bit to chunkify that hammer and then onto modeling!

The bullface in #3 was what really drew me to liking it above the others... too bad it got nix'd

@StephenVyas I liked the face too, but i thought i was going pretty face crazy with most of the concepts, so i tried to tone that down. maybe next time.

So here is the updated concept and shield mesh with base textures. The Warchief demands C&C!

Pixelatedkiwi - great paintover! It echoes this chunk of amazing feedback I got from Eric Browning, World of Warcraft's Lead Prop Artist:

"From a Warcraft standpoint, bulk everything up. Making everything thick and chunky comes partly from the RTS background of the game and partly because it reads better when you consider the field of view. You’ll notice in most games objects tend to recede quickly, so to compensate for that we exaggerate everything. Of course that means things often get too big when you get close to them, oh well.

Your textures show promise- the same rules apply. Bulky shapes, clearly defined, and dimensional. Generally you make about 25% of the detail that you want and make it big. So instead of 20 planks for a floor texture, you might only make three, and take up the whole texture with them.

Keep it up and make time to build stuff you think is awesome, the stuff that makes you glad you’re an artist.

@Snafubar7 Thanks dude! thats super helpful. and i had a look at your thread to see the paintover as well.

My plan for tonight is to try to get the mesh for the hammer started and completed/near completion. Will update when I get home!

Make the paint look worn off slightly in areas. Also check to make sure all the values are separated enough.

Here's an update on the mace. and im trying out a presentation idea. any crits would be greatly appreciated. presentation has always been a weak point of mine.

I'm working on the presentation skills also. But I'd say you'd need to change the background color. Your handle is being lost with the cool gray. I'd try a greenish color to help make the hammer pop a little more.

I think you also need a bit more color variation in your materials, and your painted pattern looks brand spank'n new. I'd try wearing it out a little bit and dulling parts of it. The whole wear and tear thing.
