Tree Talk

Trying to get something going for making a tree. The branch part was simple... done in less than 20 min. The problem I have now is knowing where to place the 2d plane and how to get the best look. I know placing more = more tree like, but the more planes I place the more polygons I have to generated and in doing that the model become less and less appealing. here is a picture thus far
As you can see its not bad... but it certainly could use some help. I use digital tutors and they have 0 tutorials on creating a tree from scratch. So any and all help would be appreciated
