Gamma issue as usual. Max convert your 8bit map to gamma 1 then "rescale" it to gamma 2.2. Gamma is vital for rendering and this is only a display issue, but once again a smart move from autodesk to activate this by default for people who don't know what it is for.
Disable gamma/lut correction.
hotfix4 for max 2011"Gamma: When using the DirectX display driver with Gamma and Exposure Control, banding could result in the viewport. This issue is resolved."
Well, obviously not Autodesk.
Ok, so tested with Nitrous, doesnt work either and i'm up to date on 2012
With direct3d, if you want the correct display, desactivate correction, if you want a correct render, activate it.

Disable gamma/lut correction.
Are you making renderings ? It should look fine then.
Any way of working around that issue without turning linear workflow off?
