I worked there for 2 years before I decided to get out of the industry. Sad to see a former company not do well, but I have to say the level of talent that is working there now seems a lot higher than when I was working there back in 2006.
Really sad to hear about this having lots of friends there from when I interned
I believe they cut all teams that were not the EQNext team. IE Plantside 2, Free Realms, Clone Wars (as the TV show is gone so is new content for the game) Really high number of people let go from what I am hearing.
Wha? Stable? If you mean having a job that is contingent on the amount of time left on the project with no thought put into the future of the team and with shareholder interests placed above developers' efforts, then yes, by all accounts lots of studios are stable. Carry on.
Contract and temp workers typically don't get announced as laid off. It's on of the benefits to the companies that use contract workers. Your contract ends and you're gone. The studio doesn't have to announce anything since you don't technically work for Sony/Microsoft/Activision/ect.

SOE for sure is the kind of company to do a big push make a big game, then it gives everyone the sack and mans their games with skeleton crews.
