I made this because there is growing interest in using 3ds Max and Wall Worm for Source Engine level design... and of course most people interested in this already have a lot of experience using Hammer. In Hammer, all geometry is created with a material... and new Max users have complained that they cannot visualize the texturing.
Anyway, for anyone reading this who might be using Wall Worm, this function is built into the latest version of WW as Brush Mode (which not only automatically adds materials but also tags/flags the new geometry as brush geometry for the VMF exporter). I just happened to release it as a separate standalone script because I thought others might benefit from it as well.
