Rocks!

Hi polycount!

I wanted to improve my zbrush skills, which are a little weak right now, so I thought that I should spend something like an hour every single day to make this possible. So I started thinking what to do, and I came up with the idea of making at least 10 rocks to start getting the basics. Im doing this because I want to learn so please tell me if something is going wrong, which is very possible due to my ineperience So I started the first one tonight, which took 1 and a half hour... and here it is:





This are my first rocks ever, keep that in mind, but I want to get that critique to help me see what is not correct.

What are you aiming for? Naturally crafted or man made rocks? It seems like a rock being sculpted, maybe in a brick block (see the top side of the first image and the left side of the second one) It has an artificial feel, not only for flat faces but also for too narrow angles between them. Anyway that's really good for first try certainly so much better than what i can achieve

I would say the rock is too clean looking at the minute. The surface you have made using the noise maker works well. But if you take a look at this rock here (http://www.heroesandgenerals.com/community/wp-content/gallery/blogs/rock1.jpg) you can see the underlying sculpt is much more damaged and varied, which gives a more realistic look.

@Esselle I am actually trying to make naturally crafted rocks, thanks for your feedback, I kept that in mind while sculpting the new one!
@TheQuietPotato Thanks for the critique man, I tried to make it like that this time!

Well, no feedback for yesterday´s rock... so I corrected the thinks I could figure out by myself,so here it is, the third rock:

Flatten out some of the noise with dynamic trim brush.

Also, are you checking out some tutorials? They can be really helpful (some, not so much)

@airdrummer: Yes I´m checkin some tutorials out, speed sculptings too, but I cant really find any which really helps, if someone can post one that would be great!

so far all of your rocks (except the 1st one) have the same sort of style, large boulder. You could try some really hard edged terraced/layered type style rocks. or some really aggressive pointy looking rocks. Rocks with cracks etc. So far I like the 2nd sculpt the best from you, keep it up!

Okay great! so here it is, ahhhh stop it with the noise, I know it can be really cool looking but in the end its just covering up shape fails. Your looking for good clear spaces and some defined detail... that's it really. Also, folks think that terrain is stupid simple, (because its organic and you can fake it?) No, get good reference, its the key in getting good results no matter what you're trying to do... until you can do it yourself. Use them brushes in Zbrush or go 3D Coat... and please make your own alphas.

Here's a rock a did a while back, I hope that it helps as a visual aid. Its all in Zbrush, but for more complex rock formations I use a combo of Z and 3D coat.

Damn these look hard but youre rocking it! When I make rocks it's kinda like you just need to get your hands dirty and give it a crack. Before you know it you're making some really solid rocks.

I really like the concept of balancing your flat surfaces with little frequency and noise during the sculpt. Stick to form and edges then cracks and pocks seems to be the jist. Feedback you get will be so mixed. This being due to that there are so many rocks that deviate from one another in terms of silhouette, texture, and size.
