While skills and maybe personality are theoretically what's more important as a potential employee, I'm worried that living experience of the city you work in may also be an important factor in a lasting game career. Does anyone have suggestion of cities or countries to live and work in for someone who is easily spotted by their appearance as being gay? So far most places I've been are okay. There are few times where people aren't so cool with not being able to tell if I'm a guy or a girl right away. Also I'd like to avoid New York City if possible...

If you don't want to move around, live in and or around LA, Seattle, maybe San Francisco, and Austin TX. They have very active dev scenes. That way, if you do contract work for a few years if you don't feel like moving you probably won't have to. Plus, I hear really great things about all of them (yes even LA I have some friends out there who love it).
Why avoid NYC?
Thank you for sharing your experience. I've been considering Texas, now I will look into it more
I'm from New York City. My family is there. Things are a wee bit complicated there right now.
