Asking for concept art permission

Hey polycounters!
I see a lot of people using concept art on here for portfolio pieces or competitions (like the monthly noob environment) and was wondering the general consensus on needing, asking and getting permission to use stuff.

Like, I get asking people on deviantart etc, but what about massive concept artists who may be too busy to read or reply to emails?

Anyway, thought it would be interesting to find out what people thought.

The general consensus here is, you should ask if you can. If it's concept art from a video game, you don't need to ask. If you've seen multiple other people model the same concept, you probably don't need to ask.

Also always make sure to credit the concept artist when you post work based on their stuff.

You don't need to ask, but it is polite and the concept artist likes to see the outcome!

If you don't get a response, don't worry about it. You can work from it as much as you want so long as no profit is to be made.

Critical rules are:
-Don't make money off it (unless explicitly allowed to)
-Credit the concept artist

Thanks for the responses guys. I mean, I understand the correct way to do things, I was more wondering how people approached it.

I am in the middle of modeling a Gray Shuko concept at the moment, and didn't think he would have time to reply to me, but he did, which was awesome. So I guess it's always good to try

i usually just start making it and credit the artist when i post it

Yeah ask! You might make a friend! I chatted with a concept artist about some of the work and they ended up providing me with additional images for the concept I was tackling. Was very helpful.
